Mothering Sunday
Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The day was spent with family and going to Church. Throughout the year the Church attended was often the “daughter church” which was the closest parish for the family. On Mothering Sunday it was considered important to return home to the “mother church”. It was common for children to pick wildflowers to give to their Mother’s as a small gift and to take to Church.
Mother’s Day Origins
Mother’s Day celebrations date back to the Ancient Greeks where they celebrated Rhea, the Mother of the Gods and Goddesses. Every spring they had festivals of worship. The Romans also celebrated a mother Goddess Cybele every March.

Remembering Mothers That Have Passed
For those that have lost their Mothers thinking about Mother’s Day could be painful or upsetting. Acknowledging how you feel and that you miss your Mother can go a long way to making you feel better about the occasion. It is a chance to remember the relationship you had with your Mother in a positive way.
There are many things you can do to remember and celebrate your Mother. To honour the memory of your Mother you could donate to her favourite cause or write a letter to her sharing your memories.
