One theory is that the hot cross bun originates from Saint Albans, England, where a 14th-century monk at Saint Alban’s Abbey developed a similar recipe called the Alban Bun and distributed it to the local poor people on Good Friday.

There is a Good Friday myth. If you hang a hot cross bun from the rafters of your kitchen ceiling, the bread will remain fresh and mould free all year-round. It can also cement friendships by sharing a hot cross bun. The bond will last forever. Hence the Irish saying, “Half for you and a half for me, good luck shall be“.

In 1592 Queen Elizabeth I claimed that hot Cross buns could only be sold on Good Friday, Christmas, or funerals as she stated they were too special to eat any other day of the year. Today we toast them, butter or jam them, and they are still one of our favourite cakes or buns!

In the late 12th century, King Edward I bought 450 eggs, covered them in gold leaf, and gave them to his royal household servants. The first British chocolate egg was made in 1873 by J.S. Fry & Sons, closely followed in 1875 by John Cadbury.

Every year there is an official egg race at the White House in America which started back in 1878 when Rutherford  B Hayes was president and has carried on since then up to Presidents’ Day.

You can also give eggs as presents, in the form of a designer egg! The most famous and stunning being a Fabergé Egg with its sapphires and diamonds! The first of which was given as an Easter gift to Alexander III and the Russian royal family. But nowadays, a good chocolate one (or two!) will do. 😀🔮❤️
