Mother’s Day 2018 –\u00a0<\/strong>WHO MOTHERS THE MOTHER? – By Charnjit<\/strong><\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mother’s Day is on Sunday 11<\/span>th<\/span> March this year.<\/span><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

It got me thinking about when I was on a training course a while back to support families with feeding their babies and we were asked, “When did you feel like you became a mum?”<\/span><\/p>\n

For some it was the point of conception.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some it was when they first felt their baby moving\/kicking.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some it was holding their baby for the first time, while for others it didn’t happen for a long time; even years after the birth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The responsibility and pressure that falls upon a mum is immense \u2013 right from the get go. Her body needs to be healthy enough for a start. If not, then many women look at other options, which, in themselves are a whole rollercoaster of emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, fast track 9 months; your bundle of joy arrives and you’re able to go home together (if you’re lucky enough to get that far).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So it Begins<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For those who don’t know, I would say the first six weeks are a blur \u2013 at best. An endless cycle of feeding, sleeping, changing \u2013 every few hours round the clock. It’s an experience that you will probably remember (albeit a blur) for the rest of your life and understand what tired means. At the time, that six weeks can seem like forever. Then all of a sudden that six weeks has become 6 months, 1 year, 2 years \u2013 sitting, eating, crawling, walking, talking \u2013 with mum in tow!<\/p>\n

Talking brings a whole new dimension to the relationship \u2013 especially the words “No” and “I don’t want to” <\/span>? The art of negotiation and distraction become invaluable skills learned at lightning speed usually in a packed supermarket on a Saturday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Night Owl or an Early Bird<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You either get a \u00a0a night owl or an early bird. \u00a0Undisturbed sleep becomes a luxury; the exception rather than the norm; and like the first six weeks, wondering if this will go on forever. \u00a0Your daytime schedule however continues regardless and by some miracle you get through each day, doing everything and more than you have ever done before you were a mum. No days off, no holiday pay, no sick pay (sick? What’s that?!). But an ever increasing list of responsibilities; learning tasks\/skills that you never thought you would or even knew existed.<\/p>\n

Oh, and the user manual? Well that is your child. You learn to read them, engage in their story, in their life, a chapter at a time. You see them grow into a person in their own right who, one day tells you what’s safe and sensible!<\/span><\/p>\n

They become these wonderful human beings and every moment, every sleepless night, nappy change, pacing the floor, lullaby, story book, nursery rhyme, hours at A&E (it happens to the best of us!) – all of it is so worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mum’s Self Care Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n

So……. Who mothers the mother? It’s an important part of a mum’s self-care plan, not to mention necessity. If you have a good relationship with your own mum, allow yourself to be the daughter, to be nurtured and taken care of from time to time. If not, allow yourself to be the daughter in other forms. Enjoy a hot meal that’s cooked for you instead of cooking for others or a nice cup of tea\/coffee. If you’re a single mum and don’t have a partner to do these things for you, give that to yourself by going to a restaurant\/cafe or going for a massage\/facial if possible. Allowing yourself to be nurtured from time to time can help to keep you on an even keel. It can remind you that you’re still a human being AND a mum.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To all you mums out there, if you feel like you’ve not done enough, remember that you’ve brought life into this world and that in itself is no mean feat!<\/span><\/p>\n
