The UK Summer Solstice \u2013 21st June 2019<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The\u00a0Summer Solstice<\/b>\u00a0– also known as Midsummer<\/strong> – arrives on Friday 21st June<\/strong>\u00a02019<\/b>\u00a0at 4:54 pm<\/strong>\u00a0BST. It occurs when one of the Earth\u2019s poles reaches its maximum tilt toward the Sun. This happens twice a year, once in the Northern Hemisphere and once in the Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n

In terms of\u00a0light there will be 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight. This day is 8 hours, 49 minutes longer than the Winter<\/strong>\u00a0Solstice<\/b>.\u00a0The earliest sunrise\u00a0was on 17th June. The latest the sun will set is on 25th June 2019.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

What does summer solstice mean?<\/h2>\n

The summer solstice is the longest day<\/strong> of the year in the Northern Hemisphere \u2013 the day on which that region receives the most hours of daylight. The Sun will appear at its highest in the northern sky, directly over the Tropic of Cancer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the opposite side of the world in the Southern Hemisphere, it will\u00a0mark the shortest day<\/strong> of the year. That area will have the least hours of sunlight for that day.\u00a0The astronomical\u00a0seasons occur as the Earth\u2019s axis is on a tilt from the sun, so different parts of the world receive more solar energy than others.\u00a0The seasons are based on the Earth\u2019s journey around the sun, with the four quarters of the orbit determining our four seasons. This, in turn, creates the seasons<\/p>\n

In Estonia<\/strong> and Latvia<\/strong>, they believe that the bonfire will scare off any mischievous or malicious spirits that will ruin their harvest crops.\u00a0\u00a0So, the bigger the fire, the more abundant the harvest will be. Estonians take it one step further as they believe\u00a0not<\/i>\u00a0having a fire celebration of some type will invite fire into their home and they will suffer loss.<\/p>\n

In Denmark<\/strong>,\u00a0customs mean burning a homemade scarecrow figure on top of the fire to represent the spirits and this will scare them off.<\/p>\n

They are more energetic with their bonfires in Croatia<\/strong>, Lithuania<\/strong>, Russia<\/strong> and Spain<\/strong>. In Spain they shout \u2018meigas!<\/i>\u2018, meaning \u2018Bad spirits go away!<\/em>\u2019, and this will allow prosperity to flow in.<\/p>\n

Flowers and Herbs<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If jumping over a bonfire doesn\u2019t liven you up then you can head over to Norway<\/strong> or Sweden<\/strong> and collect summer flowers and herbs to\u00a0guide\u00a0you to find a husband or wife.\u00a0\u00a0The more potent herbs such as St John\u2019s Wort are deemed very important for this activity. They are made into bunches that can be hung in your doorway or left overnight in water.<\/p>\n

Once they are washed the next day, they are placed under a young girl or man\u2019s pillow and this will let them dream of their future love. If you travel to Romania<\/strong>,\u00a0they perform the\u00a0dr\u0103gaica\u00a0<\/i>to meet their true love. \u00a0<\/i>The tradition involves young girls dancing around another young girl dressed as a bride.<\/p>\n
