Friday 13<\/b>th<\/b>; Middle Age Origins<\/b><\/h2>\n

The origins of Friday 13<\/span>th<\/span> are thought to have begun on Friday 13th October 1307<\/strong>. This is the day when hundreds of\u00a0<\/span>Knights Templar<\/b><\/a>\u00a0were arrested and burnt across France. But this was, in fact, a great celebration for King Philip IV of France<\/strong><\/a> and his many international followers, who had waited for this day and indeed, helped to bring it about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Knights Templar had great power and were cramping King Philips style! In many respects, they were \u201cholding the King to ransom<\/strong>\u201d So for many people, these arrests and treatment of the Templars, was a long time coming, and a great day of celebration. The Knights Templar had been prevalent in many countries, including the UK<\/strong>. There are still British towns and regions that were originally formed by the Knights Templar, including Baldock<\/strong><\/a> in Hertfordshire.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, therefore, for the Knights Templar, their supporters and those associated with them, this Friday 13<\/span>th<\/span> in 1307 was an extremely unlucky day. For those who bought about their demise, it was a greatly fortunate day! Thus, even today in France, Friday the 13<\/span>th<\/span> is considered a very lucky day<\/strong> for some people and for some it is considered unlucky! The French Lottery gives an extra bonus jackpot every Friday 13<\/span>th<\/span> and it is a popular day to try one\u2019s luck!<\/span><\/p>\n

An Unlucky Number?<\/p><\/div>\n

Is Friday 13th Really Unlucky?<\/b><\/h2>\n

For many people in the UK, it would seem that there is some apprehension concerning <\/span>Number 13 <\/b>in general. At its most extreme, this is known as\u00a0<\/span>Triskaidekaphobia<\/i><\/strong><\/a>, which comes from the Greek words meaning \u201cfear of the number 13.\u201d<\/strong> And it\u2019s not just a\u00a0worry to some people on a few days of the year \u2013 it\u00a0compels them to avoid the number 13 as much as possible in their daily lives. So much so, that on some airlines, row number 13 is missing altogether and in some hotels, there is no 13<\/span>th<\/span> floor!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly in Greece<\/strong>, Fridays are not unlucky, it is Tuesdays that are, although the Greeks\u2019 unlucky number is 13 too. This stems from the fact that the fall of Constantinople<\/strong><\/a> occurred on a Tuesday 13<\/span>th<\/span>. In other countries, 13 is not considered an unlucky number; 4, 8 and 9 hold the same stigma in various places around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you have been bought up feeling that Friday 13<\/span>th<\/span> is an unlucky day, then usually you will give a sigh of relief if it passes and nothing bad happens to you. If something bad does happen, you will probably apportion it to the fact that it happened because it was Friday the 13<\/span>th<\/span>!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucky or Unlucky?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Finally, there is a story that in 2010, a 13-year-old boy was struck by lightning in Suffolk. This supposedly happened at 1:13 pm, or 13:13. The boy was unharmed<\/strong> by the lightning strike\u2026So, is that lucky<\/strong>, or unlucky<\/strong>? You decide!<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that every day, chance things apparently happen and that does include good things as well as bad ones. Whether there is karma attached to some of these events is another question and depends on your individual belief. <\/span><\/p>\n
