The Autumn Equinox – 22nd September 2020<\/h1>\n

The\u00a0Autumn Equinox<\/strong>\u00a0this year falls on Tuesday 22nd September<\/strong>. It is the day in which the daytime hours are the\u00a0equal length as the night time hours. Visually, it’s always beautiful, with\u00a0the\u00a0colours of the leaves turning various shades of orange and brown, whilst the skies are rolling grey. It is time to start digging out the warmer clothes!<\/p>\n

Whilst we head toward the cooler days and nights, we can still enjoy the days of good weather with long walks and socially distanced time with friends and loved ones. It has been more than a challenging year and I’m sure we’re all than a little bit frustrated, but we’ve got this far! Keep your spirits up of cosy times indoors\u00a0with creature comforts, think box sets, duvet days and bubble baths!<\/p>\n

Speaking cooler days ahead, don\u2019t forget to set your clocks\u00a0backwards an hour on\u00a0Sunday 25th\u00a0October<\/strong>! Even though it’s over a month away, it’ll be here before you know it!<\/p>\n

What is the Autumn Equinox?<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Autumn<\/strong>\u00a0Equinox<\/strong>\u00a0will mark a transition period where the days begin getting\u00a0shorter<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0Northern Hemisphere<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0longer<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0Southern Hemisphere<\/strong>. This is because Earth\u2019s poles\u00a0create a maximum tilt away from the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere and maximum tilt toward the Sun in the Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n

The word\u00a0Equinox<\/strong>\u00a0is Latin which translates as \u201cequal night\u201d<\/em>, as the day and night of the first day will be of equal length. Over time the tilt will continue up to the point where the nights get darker earlier and the weather turns colder. This will carry on right up until the\u00a0Winter Solstice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How is the Autumn Equinox celebrated?<\/h2>\n

Stonehenge in the UK is usually a popular destination for those looking to\u00a0acknowledge the Autumn Equinox. It is popular among\u00a0Pagans<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Druids<\/strong>. The equinox is known as\u00a0Mabon<\/strong>\u00a0to the Pagan beliefs or\u00a0Alban Elfed<\/strong>\u00a0which marks a Thanksgiving for the harvest.<\/p>\n

Among some rural\u00a0communities, it is customary\u00a0for them to drink Burdock or\u00a0Dandelion cordials in preparation for the upcoming Autumn season. There is also an urban legend that involves balancing an egg!\u00a0It was believed to be possible on the day of the equinox\u00a0– Unfortunately, it is not!<\/p>\n

Astronomical Seasons<\/h2>\n

The astronomical\u00a0seasons occur as the Earth\u2019s axis is on tilt from The Sun, so different parts of the world receive more solar energy than others.\u00a0The seasons are based on the Earth\u2019s journey around the sun, with the four quarters of the orbit determining our four seasons. This, in turn, creates the seasons<\/p>\n

Summer<\/strong>\u00a0(June, July, August)<\/p>\n

Autumn<\/strong>\u00a0(September, October, November)<\/p>\n
