The Summer Solstice<\/strong> \u2013 also known as\u00a0Midsummer<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 arrives at 04.32<\/strong> hours GMT<\/strong> on June 21st 2021<\/strong>. Also known as the ‘The Longest Day<\/strong>‘ it will be the longest in terms of daylight hours.<\/p>\n

It is a time when the Sun<\/strong> reaches the height of its power. This happens twice a year, once in the Northern Hemisphere<\/strong><\/a> and once in the Southern Hemisphere<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

What does \u2018Solstice\u2019 mean?<\/h2>\n

The word comes from the Latin<\/a><\/strong> solstitium<\/strong>. This is made up of sol (which means sun) and stilium<\/strong> (which means still or stopped) – during a solstice, the sun is at the northernmost point in the sky and gives the impression that the sun has stopped moving for a brief period of time.<\/p>\n

What do you mean by Northernmost?<\/h2>\n

Well, as the Earth is on an axis, it is when the Northern Hemisphere<\/strong> is most tilted towards the Sun. This is when the Sun has the longest path<\/strong> through the sky, therefore, it marks the day that has the most daylight and so the longest day.<\/p>\n

In fact, some areas around the world have sunlight till as late as midnight! In the Arctic Circle<\/strong><\/a>, the Sun doesn\u2019t actually set at all. We also have a Winter Solstice<\/strong>, which marks the shortest day of the year – which you can learn more about right here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Summer<\/p>\n

What does this have to do with Stonehenge?<\/h2>\n

This ancient site<\/strong><\/a> in Wiltshire<\/strong><\/a> dates to 2500 BC<\/strong> and is famous for its alignment to the Sun during a Solstice. One of the structures actually frames the solstice. Living back then, the start of Summer would definitely be a good reason for celebration<\/strong>! It marked the beginning of warmer weather<\/strong> for them and their animals, as well as an abundance of crops.<\/p>\n

There is also another south-west facing stone that frames the Sun during the Winter Solstice<\/strong>, as well. These structures marking the solstice can be found all over the world! In Britain<\/strong>, there is the Bryn Celli Ddu<\/strong><\/a> on the island of Anglesey<\/strong>, North Wales<\/strong> and Townley Hall<\/strong><\/a> in Co.<\/strong> Louth<\/strong>, Ireland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We are sure there would have been some fantastic ceremonies<\/strong> and rituals<\/strong> in all these locations, although, we can\u2019t be sure what these entailed.<\/p>\n

Today, people still gather to celebrate the Stonehenge<\/strong> Solstice – although, the Summer Solstice 2020<\/strong> was streamed live due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n
