Friday the 13th! – Mystery and Superstition<\/b><\/h1>\n

Oh no! It\u00a0is\u00a0Friday the 13th<\/strong>! A day in which many people will be nervously watching out for random, bad luck situations to strike! You may wonder, where does this superstition surrounding this day originate from?<\/span><\/p>\n

This day <\/b><\/span><\/a>has long been shrouded in mystery and superstition<\/strong><\/a>, particularly in Western traditions. Nevertheless, it occurs at least once a year in our calendar, and sometimes, like in 2014, it happened three times!<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a combination of both the unlucky<\/strong> elements of Friday<\/strong> and the number 13<\/strong>. Historically, there are many references to these superstitions. There is not one clear origin, but it leaves a trail that goes back to ancient times!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Why is \u201813\u2019 Unlucky?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The number 13\u2019s unluckiness can be traced back to Norse mythology<\/strong><\/a>. Folklore historian Donald Dossey<\/strong> explains that the myth centres around 12 gods having a dinner party in Valhalla<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the 13th God<\/strong>, Loki<\/strong><\/a>, was not invited. As revenge, he deceived the Blind God<\/strong>, H\u00f6d<\/strong><\/a>, to kill the Chief God\u2019s son with a mistletoe-tipped<\/strong> arrow, which caused the world to go dark and enter into mourning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Running with the dinner theme, The Last Supper<\/strong> also has connotations of the number being ill-fated. The Bible states Jesus had 12 guests around the table, 13 including himself. <\/span><\/p>\n

Judas is believed to be the 13th guest<\/strong>, who betrayed Jesus, causing his death the very next day. Even now, many people think it is unlucky<\/strong> to have 13 dinner guests, sometimes putting teddies at the table to make up a 14th seat<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucky 12?<\/h2>\n

Another cause of the number\u2019s unlucky implications could be due to the positive associations of 12<\/strong>. The number 12 correlates with a sense of completeness<\/strong>. For example, the 12 days of Christmas<\/strong><\/a>, the 12 labours of Hercules<\/strong><\/a> or the 12 months in our calendar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fear of the number 13 remains rooted in our culture; some hotels do not have a 13th-floor or room, some aeroplanes do not have row 13. In fact, Winston Churchill<\/strong><\/a> refused to sit on the 13th row of a plane or theatre. This fear even has its own psychological term – triskaidekaphobia<\/strong><\/a> (pronounced tris-kye-dek-a-foh-bee-a<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n

So, Why Friday?<\/b><\/h2>\n

As mentioned, Friday<\/strong> also has unlucky associations. People believe that Friday<\/strong> was the day that Eve gave Adam the apple and the day that Cain killed Abel. <\/span><\/p>\n

The renowned English author Geoffrey\u00a0Chaucer<\/strong><\/a> stated in \u2018The Canterbury Tales<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 that Friday<\/strong> was the day of \u201call mischance<\/strong>.\u201d<\/strong> And this dates to the 14th century! <\/span><\/p>\n

Historically in Britain, Friday was the day that people were hanged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fear of Friday the 13th<\/strong> also has its own psychological term called friggatriskaidekaphobia<\/strong><\/a> (pronounced frigg-ah-tris-kah-deck-ah-f-oh-bee-ah<\/strong>). <\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, tracing the origins of this specific date is almost impossible. Still, the most common report is that on one fateful Friday the 13th<\/strong> in 1307, the French King<\/strong><\/a> arrested hundreds of the Knights Templar<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlucky and Lucky<\/h2>\n

There have been many reports of unfortunate events occurring on this dreaded date. For example, during World War II<\/strong>, Buckingham Palace<\/strong><\/a> was bombed on Friday 13th<\/strong> of September 1940. More recently, the beloved rapper Tupac Shakur<\/a><\/strong> was shot dead on this day in September 1996.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a matter of fact, in Finland<\/strong><\/a>, Friday the 13th has become National Accident Day<\/strong><\/a>. The day is dedicated to raising awareness<\/strong> about different types of safety. Over the years, it has also become instilled in our pop culture<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The date landed the ultimate accolade with Hollywood<\/strong> in 1980 when Paramount Pictures<\/strong><\/a> began the Friday 13th film series<\/a><\/strong>. As luck would have it, the date would not be the same again after hockey-masked<\/strong> Jason Voorhees<\/strong><\/a> proceeded to slash his way across many summer camps whilst cashing in at US box offices<\/strong>, as well as <\/span>a television series and several books!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
