Why is it a Wolf Moon?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The early Native Americans<\/strong><\/a> didn\u2019t record time using months of the Julian<\/strong> or Gregorian<\/strong> calendar. Instead, the tribes\u00a0gave\u00a0each full moon a nickname to keep track of the seasons and lunar months.<\/p>\n

Most of the names relate to an activity<\/strong> or an event<\/strong> at the time in each\u00a0location.\u00a0However, it\u00a0wasn\u2019t a uniform system, and tribes\u00a0tended to name and count moons differently.<\/p>\n

The January Full Moon was named Wolf Moon<\/strong> because the villagers used to hear packs of wolves howling in hunger around this time of the year.<\/p>\n

Full Moon Names<\/h2>\n

Various other names know the Full Wolf Moon<\/strong> and it can also be called\u00a0Snow Moon<\/strong>,\u00a0Old\u00a0Moon <\/strong>and Ice Moon<\/strong>.<\/strong> However, the last one is usually attributed to the February Full Moon.<\/p>\n

While the Wolf Moon<\/strong> is a Native American name, other sources\u00a0say that it has Anglo-Saxon<\/strong><\/a> origins.<\/p>\n

In Anglo-Saxon culture, the January Full Moon was also called the\u00a0Moon after<\/strong>\u00a0Yule<\/strong>, the time of the ancient festival celebrating the\u00a0Winter Solstice<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0around 21st December last year.<\/p>\n
