Full Moon and New Moon August 2017<\/b><\/h1>\n

Some exciting news for August! The Full Moon will occur on the 7<\/span>th<\/span> of the month but the fascinating news will be when the New Moon occurs later in the month on August 21<\/span>st<\/span>. In the United States a total eclipse should be visible, with partial eclipses in other parts of the world including London so get your telescopes at the ready!<\/span><\/p>\n

August’s Full Moon on the 7<\/span>th<\/span> is also known as the Sturgeon Moon, which represents the fish found in some of the American Great Lakes. What is also interesting to note is that some Indian tribes named it the Corn Moon, Fruit Moon or Grain Moon. This was to represent the crops ripening at this time of year. Some people south of the equator refer to it as; the Snow, Storm, Hunger and Wolf moon.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does the Moon work?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Did you know the moon always shows us the same face? There is no one single dark side of the moon. It is a celestial sphere that takes 27 days to rotate on its own axis and rotates around our planet once every 27.3 days.<\/span><\/p>\n

What we see when we look at the moon is simply reflected sunlight. On average, the moon will rise about 50 minutes later each day, which means sometimes it rises during the day time and others during night time hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Full Moon and New Moon Phases<\/b><\/h2>\n

When we experience a New Moon, the satellite is between Earth and the sun. The part of the moon facing toward us lot on the ground receives no direct sunlight. The only light source is the dim sunlight reflected from Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

A full moon however, occurs once the satellite has travelled 180 degrees from its new moon position. Effectively the Earth, moon and Sun have formed a line. This can offer spectacular views that so many of us look out for on a clear night.<\/span><\/p>\n

When a full moon rises, it\u2019s usually doing so some hours either side of the actual time when it\u2019s technically full. If you happen to be watching the night sky yourself, you won\u2019t even notice the difference! Interestingly, the moon will look largely the same on the days immediately before and after the official full moon.<\/span><\/p>\n
