NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
Many of us still make New Year’s Resolutions at the start of every New Year. Personally, I have to say that I don’t and never have done for the reason that I trust the Universe to bring me whatever is required for the coming year. The Resolutions that we make today to tend to revolve around self-improvement in some shape or form. For example you may make a Resolution to get out of that stale relationship you’ve been in and/or look for fresh new love for the coming year. Perhaps you want to make those much needed improvements to your home. Either way our Resolutions revolve around yourself and what we want from life for that coming year. Many of us use the New Year, as a fresh start and a personal time to limit to say “enough is enough” and make some radical changes to our lives.
HISTORY
Historically New Year’s Resolution’s didn’t start out in that way it does today, centred around personal self-improvement. It is believed that New Year’s Resolutions began with the Babylonians thousands and thousands of years ago. Then the New Year started in March and not January like it does today. March and the New Year was the time when the Babylonians would begin planting their crops for the year. They then made Resolutions to grow so many crops and they made their commitment to tend and look after the crops. They were also fastidious at sticking to the New Year’s Resolutions that they made for themselves and threw themselves into making them happen.
It was Julius Caesar many many years later in Rome that changed the New Year calendar from March and decided that the New Year should begin in January instead . The Romans began to modernise the New Year’s Resolutions and they made Resolutions of good behavior for the coming year. It is since then that things have evolved and we’ve ended up with the self-improvement style Resolutions that we have today.
STATISTICS
So many people make their New Year’s Resolutions with such good intentions and in fact only approximately 10% of people actually stick to them. This can be for a number of different reasons; may be the Resolutions set have been unrealistic or unachievable in some way. May be even people set themselves too many New Year’s Resolutions that they can’t possibly stick to them all. Sometimes people set out with good intention and get put off by small set backs that throw their confidence. So therefore, is it better to just make one New Year’s Resolution, would this be achievable? Or is it better to make less ambitious Resolutions and then celebrate the successes of smaller achievements?
