Breadcrumbing: Online Dating Behavior – By Penny B
Within the online dating scene in the modern age certain behaviors have now been labelled. We have ghosting; cutting off all contact from someone you’ve been building a relationship with completely disappearing and we also have Breadcrumbing. Breadcrumbing is what I wish to look at in this blog post as it’s a bit more subtle, can take some figuring out and is a lot more cruel than ghosting.
WHAT IS BREADCRUMBING?
Really breadcrumbing has been around for years as the definition of it is “leading someone on”. Throwing them enough “bread crumbs” to make them think there is romantic interest or that there is likely to be a relationship.
IT’S BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS SO WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?
Well now we have the Social Media and all these extra ways of communicating with someone, breadcrumbing is so much easier to achieve and so much easier to fall for too. How many times has ex suddenly appeared on your Social Media as a follow or a “friend” or simply just “liked” one of your posts out of the blue? Sometimes that’s all it takes for someone to wonder whether there is room for reconciliation. That’s daft you may think, however, it happens all the time. Many people don’t think about the implications of their actions and the impact that could have; or do they??
WHAT OTHER EXAMPLES OF BREADCRUMBING IS THERE?
- Constant texting and never committing to a meetup or date
- Arranging dates and always cancelling
- Late night booty calls/texts.
- Wanting to meet up on the spur of the moment with no pre-arrangement
- Blowing hot and cold; keen one minute and disappearing for weeks or months and then reappearing as if nothing’s happened
- Never wanting to “label” your relationship
As you can see the above is easy with Social Media and let’s face it most of us Social Media some degree these days.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO COMBAT BEING BREADCRUMBED?
Breadcrumbing is a controlling behaviour because it keeps the “victim” rooted to the spot and continually waiting things out to see if they get any more crumbs..
The best way to combat being breadcrumbed is to hit it directly, take the power away from the person who is throwing the crumbs. A lot of people don’t want to do this because they are fearful of losing the “Crumb Thrower” altogether. However, a reality check is needed here, because what is the “Crumb Thrower” really giving you? Very little! In fact it’s more likely to be boost their own ego and mess with your head!
EXAMPLES OF BREADCRUMBING
Here are some examples that may help you to spot Bread Crumbing and how be direct with your “Crumb Thrower”
Scenario: The ex adds you back to Social Media
A quick PM before you accept, to ask them what they want after all this time. Then it’s you call whether to accept them or not.
Scenario: Constant texting and never arranging to see you
A lighted hearted text that simply says “are we going to constantly text forever or did you fancy meeting up soon?”
Scenario: A text at 6pm asking if they can see you at 7.30pm?
Let them know you’re busy and if they want to see you then you need some notice as you are a busy person and you have a diary to keep.
If you are brave enough have really had enough of your “Crumb Thrower” then you can give up on them altogether.
If you can relate to any of the scenarios in this article or concerned that you are being Bread Crumbed, why not give one of our experienced Psychics a call to find out the what’s going on with your situation.
