A History of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14th February each year dates back to 496! This day of love originates from a Roman festival called Lupercalia which marked the beginning of spring. During the joyous festival, the boys would draw names of girls from a box. Festivities would be in full swing and they would be boyfriend and girlfriend. Sometimes they would get married! At the end of the 5th century, the Lupercalia festival was replaced by the celebration of Saint Valentine.
Who is Saint Valentine?
There are several stories about who St Valentine was. The popular belief is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD. St Valentine was a secret arranger of marriages. Emperor Claudius had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. As a consequence, he was thrown into jail and sentenced to death. While in jail St Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and was killed on the 14th of February.
Saint Valentine sent a farewell letter to his love signed “from your Valentine”. Valentine’s Day flowers began as a tradition in the 17th century. Roses represent love in all forms and were the choice of flowers for the day. The rose is the favourite flower of Venus, the Goddess of Love, it stands for strong feelings. Lovers began giving each other roses from that point onward.
What is Love?
Love is pure and natural. Falling in love and being in love is magical. Recognising that you are falling in love is simple. Feeling like a high in comparison, it’s said to feel the same effect on the brain as eating chocolate. Feeling love is like a duvet, it wraps you up keeping you warm and protected. Daydreaming, loss of appetite and silly smiling are all signs that you have love in your heart.
The Importance of Self-Love
The hardest relationship any of us will ever have is the relationship we have with ourselves. Practising self-love is to have self-worth, value and respect. Meeting your needs, keeping your power and knowing that you are responsible for your happiness are the first steps to self-love. Giving and receiving love is very different. Nurture yourself with love first and watch your life flourish.
