A Brief History of Easter

Resurrection Sunday commonly known as Easter is a festival and holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus. Global celebrations include Church services, festive family meals eating ham and Easter egg decoration.

With each Easter comes the various ways in which we celebrate it. The dyeing of Easter eggs represents rebirth and life. Easter bunnies can be traced back to the Goddess of Spring, whose name is Eostre.

It was Eostre (or Easter) who was also known as the goddess of fertility, which is the trait that bunny rabbits are famous for! A hollow chocolate bunny is always a very welcome treat!

The origins of the Easter basket are of a nest in which the bunny should leave eggs, which we carry on to this day, with Easter egg hunts.  Also, we might enjoy a hot cross bun!

Sweet rolls with raisins and marked with a cross on top. Back in the 12th century, this tradition started with a monk who was inspired to mark his rolls to celebrate Good Friday. 

There is an old superstition that wearing new clothes on Easter Sunday means good luck for the rest of the year. 

Celebrating Easter At Home

For most of us, this year will be very different as many of us will be celebrating at home. Here are some ideas to celebrate the Easter weekend at home. 

• Bake Easter treats like chocolate nests and hot cross buns. 
• Have an Easter egg hunt in the house and or garden. These can be eggs that you have made yourself by dyeing or chocolate eggs. You could make clues. 
• Arts and crafts for Easter can be a lot of fun. Making Easter baskets to collect the eggs on the hunt will be a lot of fun for children. 
• Some churches have online services that can be joined easily with a few clicks.

Luna’s Easter for 2020

My plan for Easter is to celebrate in as many ways as I can with my son. On Good Friday we shall decorate eggs by dyeing them and adding some glitter. I have quite a few decorations I shall be putting out around the house including bunnies and baskets.

On Easter Sunday there will be an Easter egg hunt with only a few clues. Easter lunch will be a roast chicken and all the trimmings with chocolate eggs for pudding. Easter Monday will be a day of celebration as it is my birthday  – I plan to have hot cross buns for breakfast and chocolate nests with my coffee!
