Mothering Sunday
Mothering Sunday is now celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The day was spent with family and going to Church.
Throughout the year, the Church attended the “daughter church”, which was the closest parish for the family.
On Mothering Sunday, it was considered important to return home to the “mother church”. It was common for children to pick wildflowers to give to their Mothers as a small gift and take them to Church.
Origins of the Day
The history of Mother’s Day celebrations dates back to the Ancient Greeks, where they celebrated Rhea, the Mother of the Gods and Goddesses. Every spring, they had festivals of worship and praise.
Also way back when, the Romans also celebrated a mother, Goddess Cybele, every March in much the same manner.
