Bank Holiday Orgins
Bank Holiday’s first came about in the UK and the Crown Dependencies with the first Baron of Avebury, John Lubbock. He was a politician and banker who drafted the Bank Holidays Act in 1871.
Under this Act, no person was compelled to make any payment or to do any act upon a Bank Holiday, which they would not be obligated to do or complete on Christmas Day or Good Friday.
The Bank Holiday Act was updated one hundred years later in 1971 to include further specific dates. It was updated again in 1974 to include New Years Day and then further re-updated in 1978 to include May Day!
Note: These dates vary across the UK. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do have the same holidays but on slightly different days.
