Mercury Retrograde begins on Friday 18th July 2025, to Monday 11th August 2025, lasting for approximately 3 weeks. This retrograde phase occurs during the 4th zodiac sign of Cancer (21st June to 22nd July), a Cardinal Water Sign, and continues into the 5th zodiac sign of Leo (23rd July to 22nd August), a Fixed Fire Sign. Both zodiac signs will impact the energies and themes of this retrograde phase.

The second of three Mercury Retrograde phases of 2025, will most likely involve challenges related to confidence, creativity, values, and self-expression – such as giving voice to your thoughts, feelings, and needs. Potentially, this could be a time when past issues and Exes reappear. Keep in mind that sometimes an Ex is an Ex for a reason, so use caution and be wise when making important decisions – as there is a strong possibility of miscommunications, glitches, and delays. When Mercury appears to be moving backwards, reminiscent of a ‘slingshot’, the effects will likely be felt with communications, plans, technologies, and travels. During a Mercury Retrograde phase, it is recommended to delay signing on the dotted lines for agreements and commitments, as the energies can be tricky and uncertain. If this cannot be avoided, then thoroughly review everything several times over before completion. Mercury is known for exceptional analytical skills, attention to detail, making wise decisions, and accurately assessing situations to avoid mistakes – which is why caution and awareness are needed in these areas during retrograde phases. Due to Mercury appearing to move backwards, there is a strong possibility of nostalgia and memories being evoked, or perhaps people and situations from the past are reappearing in the present tense.

What is a Mercury Retrograde, and what are the effects?
A Mercury Retrograde cycle lasts about 3 weeks (the most potent phase), occurring around 3 times per year. Mercury is the fastest moving planet, taking only 88 days to orbit the Sun – whereas the Earth takes 365 days. During Mercury Retrograde and Retroshadow, Mercury moves slower than normal. The Mercury Retrograde Diagram shows how Mercury appears to be moving backwards in the sky from the Earth’s perspective (see the diagram’s Orange S Line from West to East, showing Mercury going back on itself at the S bend). This trajectory is known as Retrograde, which means ‘moving backwards’. The Mercury Retroshadow phase is a 2 week period before and after the Retrograde cycle. The Retroshadow effects can seem much less potent than Retrograde – but are still worth consideration. The full duration for Retroshadow and Retrograde cycles are approximately 7 weeks long.
