The Key to Motivation – By Heather
One of the ways to stay motivated is to understand ‘Motivation‘. What it ultimately comes down to is having two types of motivation; Extrinsic and Intrinsic.
Extrinsic Motivation is external – like a salary or another material reward that keeps us working.
Intrinsic Motivation is internal – we do something because we get an emotional reward like ‘happiness‘.
Understanding Motivation
Understanding and identifying these types of motivation can help you achieve your goals. For example, people who are ‘Intrinsically‘ motivated tend to stick to their long term goals.
So think about why you are doing something. Do you want to change career paths, start your own business, write a book, exercise daily, quit something or clean the house?
The list goes on. For example, if you want to improve your fitness – choose an exercise that you enjoy.
But most importantly are you doing it for your own well being? If yes, then you are intrinsically motivated. So make sure that you are doing something that you enjoy.
Happiness
Happiness is the key to staying motivated. Happy people will do the things that need to get done like the housework, the 9-5, the cooking etc. A positive attitude helps them get those boring day to day things done.
If you are Extrinsically motivated – i.e. you need to have a reward to do anything, have a think about how you can reward yourself for your efforts.
It can be with something simple like a nice cup of tea/coffee, a night to yourself, a night out with friends or perhaps something big like a holiday.
Whatever you decide make sure that it’s something you will identify in your mind as being a ‘reward’ or a ‘treat’. This type of motivation is where you might use a ‘Vision Board‘ or create a ‘Wish List‘.
Vision Board
Whichever goal you are trying to accomplish whether it be spring cleaning or running your own business, here are a few ideas to help you maintain your focus.
This is a classic motivational tool. I like to leave room for updates on mine, but essentially it’s a visual aid to remind you of your goals/hopes/dreams.
You can stick images to your fridge, your kitchen cupboards basically somewhere you will see this daily or you can create a specific piece of art using a card, a scrapbook, a notice board whatever works best for you.
Cut out images, words, colours – things that will inspire you to stay focused.
Wish List
Very similar to the vision board, but it is an actual list of things that you would like to achieve. You can create them weekly, monthly or yearly. Like a ‘To Do’ list, to tick things off and feel that you have done something.
I tend to use this method for things like, ‘Save £30 this week’, ‘Clean out Cupboard Under Stairs’, ‘Organise Birthday cards for this month’ etc, these are things that would be nice if they got done but aren’t necessary.
But they are achievable and give you a sense of satisfaction and achievement which is fantastic for your sense of wellbeing. By setting yourself small challenges per week, you are proving to yourself that you can achieve them.
This makes those ‘bigger’ goals seem within reach, less daunting and gives you a feeling that you can do things.
Planning Time
This may seem as though you are procrastinating, but it’s really important to break down bigger goals into smaller more manageable tasks.
You need planning time, maybe weekly or monthly where you can sit down and work out when you have time to do something and also, what will be the best/most effective use of your time.
So try to be specific with your time, are you going to exercise, work on your marketing strategy, register with some agencies, clean out your wardrobe or do some artwork?
Remember – break goals down into smaller achievable tasks, that you can work on weekly or daily if necessary.
Contagious Energy
Motivation can be contagious. Try to surround yourself with people with similar goals or someone that you know will help motivate you.
One of my goals at the moment is to decorate the house, obviously, I can’t do the whole house at once, so I need to break it down into rooms. And I can say that motivation dims. But the desire to get it done wins out.
So I am enlisting the help of friends and family in certain jobs to help keep me focused. For example, I have hit a bit of a wall in the kitchen, so I have arranged for a friend to come over and help me with the next job.
She loves to decorate and is very enthusiastic about helping. I know she’ll give me a boost in energy for the project and I’ll be back on track before I know it.
Music
This sounds simple but it’s effective. Get some tunes on and get stuck into the job at hand. I find this one most effective for physical tasks. The time will fly by and you will get a sense of achievement whilst enjoying yourself.
The key for me to staying motivated is finding Intrinsic Motivation. If you enjoy yourself or feel like you are achieving then you are already winning.
Be Happy, Stay Optimistic and Know – not everything will be fun, but you’ll feel amazing about yourself for doing it anyway.
